Jonnie Bridgman has a varied and extensive music education background. After completing a diploma in jazz studies at Malaspina University College in Nanaimo, he went on to earn a music degree from Uvic majoring in music education and also received his BC teaching certification. He has been lucky to be able to study with several of BC’s finest saxophonists including Phil Dwyer, Wendell Clanton, Larry Crawford and Larry Miller. After completing his studies at Uvic, Jonnie maintained a position as the band director at Similkameen Elementary Secondary School in Keremeos, BC for two years teaching a variety of music programs to students from grade 5 to 12. Now that Jonnie has returned to Victoria he currently performs with several local jazz groups and an 11-piece dance band. He has written and recorded music with a number of different groups including Alboa, The New Groovement, Broken Spiral, and the Paper Cranes. Jonnie has experience conducting various adult and student ensembles and will be co-directing the Larsen Music Summer Switch Band this summer. Jonnie specializes in woodwind instruments and teaches private lessons on saxophone, flute and clarinet. Jonnie is also well versed in both classical and jazz music theory and enjoys working with students on improvisation techniques. Jonnie’s primary goal is to provide students with the tools to play and enjoy music for the rest of their life.

Emily McDermid is finishing her Bachelors of Music Education at the University of Victoria. While her main instrument is trumpet, she is experienced with other brass including horn and tuba. Currently she is involved with the UVic Wind symphony and a Balkan gypsy jazz band named Bucan Bucan. Emily teaches a wide range of styles thanks to studying under five fantastic private instructors including Lou Ranger, Niki Taylor, and Tom Shorthouse.
